The Pandemic Gave Him Back His Pen — Neeraj Rathee

Instagram: @rathee_neeraj

Neeraj Rathee’s relationship with art began in the 7th grade when he joined an art club at school in Rohtak, Haryana. Immersed in drawing and painting from those early years, he went on to earn both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in applied arts from the prestigious College of Art, Tilak Marg, New Delhi. Specialising in applied art and animation, Neeraj built a strong foundation in visualization skills and digital design technologies.

When he transitioned to a teaching role at the university level, the daily art practice that had once defined him quietly faltered—design thinking, cultural studies, and sustainable design filled the hours instead. But the pandemic, with its enforced stillness, proved to be a turning point. With ample time for reflection, he rediscovered his artistic passion through sketching daily from life and imagination. He has since shifted from oils on canvas to exploring the possibilities of paper and ink—a return to art in its most essential form.

AT THE BHAVKALA COLLECTIVE

Neeraj brings to the Bhavkala Collective the sensibility of someone who has walked through the full arc — from instinctive childhood passion, through formal rigour, through years of distance, and back again.

His ink and paper works carry the freshness of someone reconnecting with pure creativity, and the depth of an artist who has never really stopped observing.
