Charoo Shukla grew up in a large Delhi joint family, a household brimming with stories, folklore, the lore of elders, and the creative energy of relatives and friends. Commerce was the path she chose — a postgraduate degree from Delhi University and a career aimed at civil services. Yet painting had always been there, humming quietly in the background; she had first picked up a brush in school and never really forgot how it felt. Life, however, is good at burying things.
Higher studies came, then the grind of civil service preparation, and the paintbrush was set aside.
It was during the COVID-19 pandemic that Charoo’s husband gently reminded her of what she had been carrying inside all along. She surfaced. Starting modestly on a small drawing file, she began allowing herself the permission to paint and from there, she started expanding her works of art.
Interestingly her canvases now include sarees, furniture, and everyday objects she transforms into art.
