Atul Bhunkal is an interdisciplinary artist from Gurgaon, Haryana, whose formal training in Fine Arts from Chandigarh University, and worked with the Wilson Art Gallery and Museum in the UK.

A registered artist with the All India Artist Association, Atul has exhibited at prestigious platforms including the Annual Exhibition at Bombay Art Gallery and Lalit Kala Akademi, where his compositions have garnered sustained attention.

Working across mediums, Atul is not just a maker of beautiful things, he is a thinker. His art simplifies the complex, translating the language of spirituality into something accessible and visceral, exploring its role in addressing the human condition. He creates works that challenge perceptions of metaphysics and prompt viewers towards introspection.

AT THE BHAVKALA COLLECTIVE

Atul Bhunkal spent over seven hours in head-to-toe white cloth – performing “Trained Under Tragedy”, allowing visitors to respond to his presence in real time—an interaction that ranged from gentle marks to rougher gestures. According to the artist, the work was rooted in a deeply personal memory of being introduced, as a child, to pornography and the long, difficult process of overcoming the addiction that followed.
An experience he framed, as a reflection on how early exposure can leave lasting “imprints” on a young mind, like paint on a blank canvas. While the room shifted between curiosity and discomfort, some viewers chose quieter forms of participation.
Sonakshi Agarwal, founder of Bhavkala, said she sat beside him and meditated, describing the still figure as “like a soul,” and the performance as a reminder that what we pass on intentionally or not can shape someone for years.
